Rethinking Traditional Book Clubs to Transform Education

PL Book Clubs
Over the 2018-2019 school year, participants will pick their passion, pace, redefine their purpose, and prototype new ideas/learning with an opportunity to share at the first ever Dallas ISD Personalized Learning Summit in January 2019. There are 25 spots for each Book Club and registration goes live May 20th.

The Process
Picture
Passion
Choose a Book Club that connects to your interest and context.
Pace
Select the path that works best for you:
  • Create your own
  • Read on your own- engage together
  • Monthly suggested reading + discussion (alternating between face-to-face and virtual hangouts)
Purpose
Redefine what is possible within your role through learning and strategies from book selections.
Prototype
Short-cycle hacks that bring new ideas and new learning to life within your context.
Leading Innovation
Led by: Kristen Watkins

In order to stay relevant and impactful, school leaders need to abandon the rigid structures designed for less dynamic times and embrace new school rules that
expand cutting-edge organizational design and modern management techniques. This Book Club is for leaders who want to explore how the combination of new school rules and radical candor can transform them into leaders who care personally at the same time that they challenge directly.

Suggested audience: principals, assistant principals, system leaders

Bringing Joy into Education
Led by: Vanessa Rodriguez

The deck is not stacked against you, no matter what kind of hand you've been dealt!  This Book Club will help educators explore strategies to become the Wild Card that changes the game for students, creating cultures of innovation and real learning.  When we draw on our authentic self--our past experiences, personality quirks, interests, hobbies, and strengths to deliver content creatively we are that much closer to discovering what school could be.

Suggested audience: teachers and instructional coaches

Braving the PL Wilderness
Led by: Jason Broussard

The PL wilderness is an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching for belonging. The story we tell ourselves is that we are all alone in the work.  What if we were brave enough to craft a story that celebrates our PL journey, no matter how untamed or unpredictable? A story that empowers a sense of belonging through a collective voice.  This Book Club is for educators in all roles who are interested in exploring how the power of storytelling can help brave the PL wilderness.

Suggested audience: educators in a personalized learning context

The Vulnerable Educator
Led by: The PL Team

How does trauma affect a child's mind--and how can that mind recover? Culturally responsive instruction has shown promise, but many teachers have struggled with its implementation. Only when we understand the science of the mind and the power of love and nurturing, can we hope to heal the spirit of even the most wounded child and close the achievement gap. This Book Club is for educators interested in learning more about cutting-edge neuroscience research for designing and implementing brain-compatible culturally responsive instruction that is rooted in vulnerability.
